Dahlia ‘Bishop’s Children’

Beautiful bronze-leaved Dahlia with a mix of sultry red, pink and orange flowers

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Dahlia ‘Bishop’s Children’ is a half-hardy perennial that is perfect for containers and great for providing colour and interest deep into the season and into autumn. We grow them from seed but they soon form tubers under the soil from which emerge the richest, most beautifully textured, dark bronze-crimson foliage in mid-spring. The plant then bulks up through the early part of the season before the flower buds begin to appear from mid to late summer onwards. The open, single flowers are a really lovely mixture of rich colours, from deep oranges and reds to sultry peach and pinks – all of which combine wonderfully with the dark foliage. There’s nothing else quite like a Dahlia like this in the garden.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will flower from July onwards and through into autumn and the first frosts, and in good soil will grow to an eventual height of 90cm (36 inches) with a spread of around 75cm (30 inches).

Growing Advice

Dahlias are increasingly seen as a staple of the late-summer and autumn garden, particularly as the climate warms and it becomes more viable to grow them outside year-round. This variety pairs and contrasts beautifully with plants with mid-green foliage, and also complements the stronger coloured flowers that tend to emerge later in the season. The general rules of Dahlia growing apply – nip out the stems early to encourage branching, protect from slug earlier in the season, dead head regularly, and then provide some protection in winter. In milder areas Dahlias can be risked in the ground, at least where there is good drainage and a generous mulch is provided in autumn. Otherwise the tubers can be dug up and stored over winter, or the plants can be grown in pots brought into a frost-free environment over winter. In any case, wait until touched by the first frosts of the season and cut down before providing the winter protection.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
