Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’

Striking, arching red flowers in late summer above swathe of sword-shaped foliage

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is perhaps the best known crocosmia cultivar. It also grows to become one of the largest. From mid-spring onwards swaths of sword-shaped, upright grassy foliage emerge from the underground corms, the vigour of which portends the dramatic flowering display to come later in the summer. When the flowers do arrive they do so on strong stems that hang above the foliage, dark at first and then opening into flowers of the cleanest and boldest red, which contrasts with the plant’s darker flower stems and calyxes. Like all crocosmias, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is one of the best plants for late summer colour – and provides architectural interest once the flowering is over and into autumn.
The plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall. The foliage will grow to an ultimate height of about a metre (three feet or so), with the flower stems 20 or 30cm (12-15 inches) above that. They spread via corms underground, and can form a substantial patch in a year or two, given the right conditions.

Growing Advice

Crocosmias are South African plants that love as much sun as they can get. Situate them in a full-sun location for best flowering – they will take less sun but are unlikely to flower as prolifically (we quite like the foliage as a contrast in borders, so flowers aren’t always the first and only interest). Though they are grassy they also aren’t keen on completely drying out, and prefer soils that are well-drained but fairly constantly moist, certainly while they’re settling in.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
