Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

Low-growing perennial with intense blue flowers and good autumn colour

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (Blue Leadwort or the hardy Plumbargo) is a great plant for late-season interest. It is a woody sub-shrub / perennial plant that dies back and loses its leaves over winter but reemerges in spring with bright green leaves on red stems, before maturing into deeper greens and reds. In autumn the leaves turn completely red before falling. The plant stays relatively low and dense, and from late summer and through into autumn puts on masses of intense, bright blue flowers which are striking both because there is nothing else that colour at that time of the season, and because they often contrast with the rich red foliage of the plant as it takes on its autumn colours. Because it grows densely it makes a great ground cover plant for suppressing weeds.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an eventual height of 30-40cm (12-15 inches) with a spread of a little more than that.

Growing Advice

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides is relatively easy to grow, asking only for well-drained soil (it won’t like winter boggy conditions) that doesn’t dry out completely in summer. It will grow well in full-sun or partially shaded locations, and prefers a spot that’s reasonably sheltered. We have some growing on a slope where it slowly spreads about and provides good ground cover to smother weeds – and we just tidy the plant up in spring to let new foliage emerge.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
