Cerastium tormentosum var. columnae

Tumbling alpine plant with silver foliage and masses of white flowers in early summer

Two plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Snow-in-Summer (Cerastium tomentosum) is an evergreen ground-covering plant, with profuse white flowers in late spring through early summer. The blooms are silvery-white and star-shaped and, when in full bloom, the mounded plant looks like a pile of snow, hence the plant’s name. The blooms are offset by the attractive, silver, greyish green foliage, giving the plant a year-round appeal.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 1 litre pots (the price is for two of these plants). They will flower from late May through June and will grow to an ultimate height of around 25cm (10 inches) with a spread of 50cm (20 inches).

Growing Advice

Like many alpines, Snow-in-Summer prefers good drainage and a good amount of sun, though it will grow decently in partial shade in warmer climates. It makes a classic addition to a rock or gravel garden, where it can scramble across open ground and tumble down rocks and walls in an attractive, informal way. Ours grow really well on a gentle slope and on the edge of a small terrace, where drainage is good and the plant has an opportunity to spill over the edge.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
