Centaurea dealbata

Perennial Cornflower with soft lilac pink flowers from early summer.

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Centaurea dealbata (the Persian Cornflower) is a less well-often grown, clump-forming hardy perennial with strikingly shaped flowers from early summer. The attractively divided gray-green foliage emerges in spring and is followed by those very identifiable cornflower textured buds on strong upright stems – interesting before the flowers even emerge – that make way to frilled flowers that are a delicate soft lilac pink in colour. The flowers start emerging in early summer, are at their most numerous in early to mid summer, but if dead-headed can keep appearing sporadically throughout the growing season. The foliage has a neat compact habit.
These established plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an eventual height of around 60cm (2 feet or so) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Cornflowers, natively found in open meadows, are plants for sunny borders in the garden and will always shine in open areas with lots of light. They need a soil that drains reasonably well but also really don’t like to dry out – in our experience they can wilt in the hottest sun but will always pick up with cooler weather and a little water. Keep the flowers deadheaded for a good display and if the foliage gets a little tatty later in the season you should get a new flush if you cut back to the ground (if not done too late).

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
