Bistorta (Persicaria) amplexicaulis ‘Rosea’

Refined bistorta cultivar with long-lasting pale-pink flowering spikes above mounds of lush mid-green foliage

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Bistorta amplexicaulis ‘Rosea’ (previously persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Rosea’) is a refined cultivar of the common bistort. The leaves have the same ovate shape but they have a dusty green/grey colour and are smaller and slender. They emerge en masse from mid-spring and instantly start filling out space in empty beds and lending a lushness to the late spring garden. From early summer the flower spikes emerge above the mounding foliage, with slender, crimson flower spikes and flowers opening a contrasting pale pink, and continuing throughout summer. Like all bistorts we find it is versatile and adaptable and is well-suited to partially shaded spots where it will grow vigorous to fill empty spaces.
A great ‘do-er’ with a refined and naturalistic vibe, bistorta amplexicaulis works well in woodland-themed gardens but is versatile enough to look at home in a number of different schemes, and can be used as ground cover or as front of border plants. It looks particularly good alongside water margins and streams and in bog gardens, where the damp soil will help the plant thrive. It is also at home in looser, wilder schemes – it’s much loved by pollinators – but the neat, lush foliage and pastel flowers will also help it find a home in more modern and cottage garden schemes.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to a height of around 1 metre or 3 feet in the right soil.

Growing Advice

Bistorta amplexicaulis is a generally very easy to grow plant. It prefers to be on the moist side (though avoid waterlogged locations in winter) – hence they are well suited to water margins, but will survive in drier soil, though perhaps without as dense a flowering display. It is very hardy and will come back strongly each spring. They are also generally pest-free and avoided by slugs and rabbits, despite the lush-looking foliage.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
