Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’

Late-summer flowering Michaelmas Daisy with masses of lavender-blue daisy flowers and neat, upright foliage

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’ is popular for good reason – it is one of the most floriflerous, vibrant and reliable plants you can grow for the late summer garden. It bides its time, emerging in spring with strong, upright fresh green stems that fill out the late spring and early summer borders and provide a perfect stage for early season flowerers and performers. Over the summer the stems grow taller until, from mid-summer, they spread out into masses of small unassuming buds that portend the show to come. Then, one morning, the first pop of colour bursts forth, until quickly the whole plant is covered in a beautiful show of mid-sized vibrant lavender-blue daisy-like flowers with contrasting yellow centres. The show goes on and intensifies through into late-summer and early autumn, when the flowers begin to gracefully die back and attractive, fluffy seed heads emerge, which can be left over winter for structure and wildlife interest.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 1 metre (40 inches) and a spread of around 50cm (20 inches).

Growing Advice

Aster ‘Mönch’ is a pretty easy and reliable plant to grow, but one that will benefit and reward the best placing in the garden. It’ll do best in full sun locations but will still flower strongly in areas with partial shade, and wants rich, loamy soil that still has good drainage so it doesn’t sit in winter wet. Make sure it doesn’t dry out too much, particularly once it starts to form buds and come into flower, and if the stems get too tall like many late-season flowers it will benefit from a chelsea chop to encourage more bulking up and more flowering (albeit the flowers come a little later and are a bit smaller). Like other asters it can attract slugs and snails early in the season, but once it hits its stride in mid-season it quickly outgrows any damage, in our experience. It looks particularly good grown in drifts, mingling with shrubs and other perennials and allowed to clump up, but also has a neat enough habit to perform well in a container or in a more isolated location.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
