Aster ageratoides ‘Asran’

Late-summer to autumn flowering Aster with masses of pale lilac daisy flowers

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Aster ageratoides ‘Asran’ is a clump forming perennial that we find really useful in the garden because it provides an incredible show just as the last days of summer are fading into autumn and then right through until the first frosts. The strong, divided foliage on bright red stems emerges first in spring, initially forming a mat of green and then as the days warm begin to gain in height. Even at this stage it’s a great filler, providing for an attractive sea of green through late spring and into summer, providing a lush backdrop that allows other mid-summer attention grabbing flowers to do their thing. Then just as the sun begins to dip lower and the summer wanes into autum, Aster ‘Asran’ sends up clusters of small, pale-lilac daisy-like flowers with yellow centres that cover the foliage for months deep into autumn. It keeps the food going for pollinators and also keeps giving us reason to stay out in the garden and hold back the winter as long as we can.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 1 metre (40 inches) and a spread of around 50cm (20 inches) – though it will gradually spread around if it’s happy.

Growing Advice

Aster ageratoides ‘Asran’ is an easy and adaptable plant to grow. It’ll grow well in sun or partial shade, or even quite deep shade, as long as it gets some light. It asks only for reasonable soil that doesn’t completely dry out or get too boggy in winter. Like many late-flowerers, you can Chelsea chop it to control the height of the foliage and prevent too much late-season flopping, which can pay dividends if heavy autumn rain sets in (like it regularly does in Cornwall!).The biggest challenge we find with it is its vigour – it can take over in a small spot but so we advise checking its growth in early spring when there isn’t much else about by just edging with a spade to control any runners. Otherwise it’s a pretty guaranteed performer with little maintenance required.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
