Aruncus dioicus

Stately, elegant plant with strong foliage and plumes of feathery white flowers in summer

Established plants supplied in 2 litre containers

Description

Aruncus dioicus, commonly known as Goatsbeard, is a stately, elegant plant that grows natively in tree-covered mountain and hillsides, particularly along the sides of streams. Like most shade-tolerant plants, it has large, attractively shaped leaves that clump together and give the plant a strong presence in the garden from the moment it reappears in spring. In late spring and into summer the flowers appear, held on tall plumes above the clumped foliage and together looking like large, pure white feathers meandering slowly in the breeze. It looks fabulous combined with more plants with finely divided foliage (like ferns), but can also combine well with other shade-tolerant, moisture loving plants like astilbes, brunneras, or pulmonarias.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. In good soil and with time they can grow to an ultimate height of up to 2 metres (more than six feet), with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Aruncus, like astilbes, like things damp – hence why they are often found on water margins. They will grow otherwise in a range of conditions – including full sun, where the soil doesn’t dry out, but are happiest in woodland conditions with partial shade. They like rich, fertile soils (think woodland floors). The main thing to remember is to plant them somewhere where they have room to grow and breathe – they can get large – and in our opinion are at their best when they are allowed to grow in a way that allows them to provide that majestic presence in the summer borders.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
