Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Black Barlow’

Spring to summer-flowering perennial with sultry, black-purple double-flowers and ferny foliage

Price is for two plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Black Barlow’ is a really distinctive, slightly moody cultivar of this late-spring to early summer flowering hardy perennial that, like the species plant, provides a wonderful shot of colour once the spring bulbs are over but before the summer perennials flower. It has lovely fern-like foliage and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of stems with long-spurred flowers that open into the most sultry shade of deep black-purple. The flowers are also ruffled with multiple layers of petals, quite distinct from the simpler flowers of regular Aquilegia vulgaris. Once flowering is over the foliage provides a lovely foil for later flowering plants. If cut back the plant will put on mounds of fresh looking foliage to prolong the interest through the growing season.
These established plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 1 litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) and a spread of around 40cm (16 inches).

Growing Advice

Aquilegias are easy plants to grow. They do best in partial shade conditions in soil that is well-drained but doesn’t dry out completely – they work well in woodland schemes and in areas that get spring sunshine before the leaves of trees and shrubs are fully out. If the foliage gets tatty in summer, it can be cut back and will send up fresh foliage through summer and into autumn. It can take a full season or so to establish a full-sized clump. This cultivar prefers a little more sun than other variants, and is also, in our experience, not quite as hardy – so avoiding siting in the deepest frost pockets for reliable returns year after year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
