Agastache rugosa

Tall handsome plant with aromatic foliage and purple flower spikes from mid-summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Agastache rugosa (commonly known as the Korean mint) is an upright growing aromatic herbaceous perennial plant. The flowers emerge on spikes (each around 10cm high) above the mounding foliage from mid-summer and continue into autumn, and are a soft purple-blue and much loved by pollinators. These are complemented by healthy, lush and aromatic foliage that is often used for making teas. Despite their excellent garden pedigree, Agastache plants have not been as traditionally ubiquitous as they deserve. However they now have a rapidly growing following in the UK and make regular appearances at RHS flower shows, where they often provide an excellent foil for blowsy plants and a wash of colour and vigour in their own right.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost, and are supplied in two-litre containers. The plants will reach an ultimate size of up to 1 metre (3 feet or so) high with a spread of around half of that, depending on conditions

Growing Advice

In the wild Agastache rugosa plants grow in sunny temperate conditions, often near waterways where they can get a constant supply of water. In a garden situation they therefore prefer soils that don’t dry out and in as sunny a spot as they can get – they will grow and flower in shadier locations but the foliage will not be as aromatic, nor the plant so floriflerous. Like most agastache varieties, while hardy and not liking to dry out too much in summer, they are not very fond of soggy soils in winter, so try to locate somewhere with good drainange. If in doubt, collect seeds to sow early the following year – they will flower from their first year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
