Achillea millefolium ‘Cassis’

Long-flowering umbellifer with wine-red flowers and bright green ferny foliage

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Achillea millefolium ‘Cassis’ is a long-flowering, hardy and reliable perennial that will come back year after year and is much loved by pollinators of all sorts. Like most other achilleas, it has ferny foliage that is unlike almost anything else in an average flower border and offsets its large heads of umbellifer flowers, each a rich cherry red colour that works well in contrast with a range of other mid to late summer colours, particularly those in ‘hot’ gardens and tropical schemes. Because of their structure and form achilleas look as much at home in more formal arrangements as cottage garden type schemes. They are also much loved by flower arrangers as a source of cut flowers, again, in part, to their long blooming time.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will flower from mid-summer through to early autumn, and will grow to an ultimate height of around 60-80cm (24-31 inches).

Growing Advice

Achilleas aren’t particularly fussy plants. They prefer decent drainage and are well-suited to hot, sunny spots in the garden. More shaded locations are likely to create more open, leggy plants. Like many perennials they are well-suited to dividing in spring, and will respond to a mid-summer prune once the first flush of flowers are largely over by throwing up compact clumps of fresh foliage. They should be cut to the ground in spring but may provide some structure if left over the winter.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
