Bistorta (Persicaria) affinis ‘Superba’
(Himalayan Bistort, 1-Litre Plants)

Ground-covering persicaria with dusty pink-white flowers and contrasting red buds and stems

Established Plants in 1-Litre Containers

Description

Bistorta affinis (previously Persicaria affinis) ‘Superba’ is a low-growing, ground-covering perennial that is excellent as a weed suppressor and to fill spaces in shadier areas. The low-growing foliage is an attractive mid-green colour, turning red-green and bronze in autumn, and throughout the growing season the plant is clothed in a tapestry of shifting colours – dense spikes of tiny, fluffy flowers that open a delicate pale pink and slowly transform into deep crimson-red as they age, creating an attractive two-tone effect. Its neat, leathery, lance-shaped green leaves form a solid, low dense mat that develops warm, coppery-bronze tones in autumn, remaining attractive through winter. It spreads well by trailing stems but never takes over, providing a low-maintenance option for areas bordering streams or paths, on the edges of woodland or other areas with dappled shade.

Growing Advice

Bistorts are in general a low-maintenance, easy to grow option and we find Bistorta affinis to be no exception. They’re not the best in the glare of full sun or full shade, so keep them in some shade away from the hot afternoon sun, and they prefer soil that’s on the moister side. If you want to limit their spread they are easy to pull out, or divide and move elsewhere, in the spring or the autumn.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
