Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot, 1-Litre Plants)

North American prairie wildflower with lilac-pink flowers in summer and an upright, clumping habit

Established Plants in 1-Litre Containers

Description

Monarda fistulosa is a highly aromatic herbaceous perennial wildflower found natively in the prairies of North America that introduces striking texture, movement, and fragrance to summer borders. It forms robust, clump-forming mounds of lance-shaped, minty-scented, grey-green leaves. From mid-summer through to early autumn its strong, square stems are topped by eye-catching, ragged flower heads that resemble fireworks or shaggy pompoms. These unique crowns consist of clusters of two-lipped, tubular pale lavender-pink flowers. It is an indispensable classic for wildlife gardens, prairie-style borders, or sensory cottage gardens.

Growing Advice

Monarda fistulosa prefers to be sited in bright positions in full sun or light, partial shade. It handles a diverse range of soil textures from sand to heavy clay, growing successfully in dry, average, or moisture-retentive borders as long as it does not sit in deep winter flooding. It is generally exceptionally hardy and trouble-free, performing beautifully when planted alongside tall autumn grasses or other prairie plants such as echinaceas and rudbeckias. It is generally a low maintenance border option – simply clear away old dead stems and spent flower heads in early spring to make room for clean new shoots, and divide the clump every three years to keep it vigorous.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
