Veronica gentianoides (Gentian Speedwell)

Lovely little cottage garden perennial with spikes of palest-blue flowers in early summer

Established, Garden-Ready Plants in 2-Litre Containers

Description

Veronica gentianoides, commonly known as Gentian Speedwell, is a sophisticated and understated perennial that serves as the perfect “bridge” between spring bulbs and summer borders. It produces elegant, upright spires of pale, china-blue flowers that rise gracefully above a low-growing mat of glossy green foliage that emerges bright green and fades to darker green as the season progresses. In contrast to many other speedwells that flower later in the season, this variety is one of the first to bloom, offering a soft pastel highlight in late spring and early summer. Its lustrous, semi-evergreen leaves provide year-round texture, making it an excellent choice for edging sunny pathways or adding light and colour to a woodland border.

Growing Advice

Gentian Speedwell is an undemanding survivor that thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil and is particularly happy in a woodland-edge setting where it can receive dappled light. It is ideal for the front of a mixed border or for creeping through moist rockeries. To keep the plant tidy and encourage a lush carpet of foliage, cut back the flower spikes immediately after they have faded. Every few years, clumps can be easily divided in autumn or spring to maintain and give the plant additional vigour.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
