Primula pulverulenta (Candelabra Primrose)

Candelabra primula with wine-red, whorl-shaped inflorescences

Established, Garden-Ready Plants in 2-Litre Containers

Description

A majestic and elegant candelabra primula, Primula pulverulenta is a recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit and a true standout in the spring and early summer garden. It is famous for its “mealy” silvery-white stems which provide a dramatic, frosted contrast to tiers of deep wine-red flowers. A robust and easy-to-grow perennial, it is perfect for adding vertical interest to damp, shaded borders or pond margins.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in two-litre containers. The foliage will grow in clumps to about 20cm (8 inches) high, with flowers held high above the basal foliage to around 60cm (24 inches). The plant will spread to ultimately form a clump about 20-30cm (7-12 inches) wide. Where happy they will self-seed to form small colonies.

Growing Advice

P. pulverulenta thrives in rich, consistently moist soils and is one of the easiest tall primulas to grow. It is at home in woodland gardens, bog gardens, or along stream margins. It prefers partial shade but can tolerate sun if the ground is kept reliably damp. These are hardy plants that will happily self-seed to create a naturalised colony over time.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
