Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Persicaria virginiana var. filiformis is an unusual herbaceous perennial grown principally for its handsome foliage and masses of deep-red flower spikes that appear in the second half of the growing season. The foliage emerges in early summer in a vibrant green colour with deep-red chevron markings – smaller and more textured than many persicaria cultivars. As the season progresses the leaves mature to a deeper green, but the contrast with the red markings remains just as strong. The flowers appear on dark, wiry stems high above the foliage towards the end of summer and go on right through autumn until the first frosts.

We find this plant a great option for combining with tropical plants, with the finely-shaped and marked foliage contrasting wonderfully with large-leaved cannas, bananas, colocasias or even other persicaria cultivars. The plant is compact and dense with foliage, making it also a great filler and contrast in mixed borders, or in a container scheme. They can also work well contrasted with the divided foliage of ferns and polemoniums in shadier, damper locations.

These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 75cm (30 inches) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Like most persicarias, this cultivar is best where the conditions don’t dry out too much, so combine it with other moisture-loving plants rather than Mediterranean plants. It’s tolerant of sun or shade, though the amount of shade is likely to alter the coloration of the foliage a little and the density of the flowers. It’s also better in cooler spots – we find it grows excellently in our warm (and sometimes wet!) summers and mild winters here in Cornwall. We also find its compact and dense growth makes it perfect for container growing.
