Lychnis arkwrightii ‘Vesuvias’ (3 x 9cm plants)

Long-flowering and easy-to-grow perennial campion with vibrant lava-orange flowers

Price is for three plants in 9cm containers

Description

Lychnis arkwrightii ‘Vesuvias’ is an aptly named campion that does indeed look something like a miniature volcano in full-flow in the flowering season. It has slightly hairy, downward curved leaves that grow on upright stems, emerging a light military green in colour and settling to dark green with dusky red undersides. The flowers emerge early in the season and have that classic silene / campion star-shape with distinctive notched petals. Their scarlet-orange colour contrasts wonderfully with the dark foliage and they go on appearing on the plant throughout the season, often well into late-summer and early autumn.
These young plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 9cm containers (the price is for three of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of around 50cm (20 inches) with a spread of 40-50cm (15-20 inches).

Growing Advice

Campions are relatively easy plants to grow, doing well in full-sun and partial sun locations. They do like decent drainage so won’t thrive in a spot that goes boggy over winter, and like a decent amount of fertility in the soil (so not best suited to rock gardens). Aside from this they will perform without complaint over a long period in summer, and, though relatively short-lived, will happily self-seed in the right spot to keep the performance going year after year (though in our experience never becoming a nuisance). In richer soils they can develop a wilder habit and so would benefit from being planted in more relaxed schemes or otherwise given a little support to keep the stems and flowers upright.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
