Description

Viola sororia ‘Rubra’ is a lovely low-growing perennial Violet that is native to North America, where it grows happily in rich, moist soils at the margins of wooded streams and rivers and around swamps. Like many violets it is very easy to grow and wonderfully adaptable, making a great plant for margin areas around ponds and so on in the garden, but also working tumbling around in rock gardens, at the front of borders or in containers, where the large, vibrant flowers can be best enjoyed. The fresh, bright-green coloured heart shaped leaves tumble over each other in loose, spreading mounds, providing great interest even when not in flower. The flowers, which are bright purple-red in colour with distinctive throats and lips, mingle happily among the foliage when they emerge from mid-spring – though mostly over by late summer they can often go on appearing sporadically through the season.

These plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 9cm containers (the price is for three of these plants). They will grow to around 10-15cm tall (4-5 inches), with a spread of around 30cm (12 inches).

Growing Advice

Perennial violets like this are often worth growing for their easy-going, relaxed nature. Exceptionally easy to grow, the biggest thing to consider is to site it where its lovely leaf colour provides an effective contrast (the heart-shaped leaves look good for instance paired with ferns or the strappy foliage of spring bulbs) and where the flowers don’t get too lost. Speaking of flowers – like with many perennials it will flower best in sunnier (at least partial sun) spots, but is otherwise not too fussy about soil though doesn’t like to dry out too much (particularly in full-sun locations).
