Mitella breweri

Charming little evergreen perennial with mounding leaves and slender spikes of yellow-green flowers

Established plants in two-lite containers

Description

Mitella breweri is commonly known as Brewer’s Mitrewort or Bishop’s Hat on account of the shape of its flowering structure resembling a Bishop’s Mitre (sadly, at least for me when I found out, ‘Brewer’ refers to the botanist William Brewer, rather than anything more exciting relating it to brewing beer!). It’s an attractive little plant that loves the shadier spots in the garden where it will mingle happily in an elegant, understated way with other woodland plants like ferns, hostas and hellebores. The rounded, slightly scalloped leaves mound up neatly and attractively, and have a slightly hairy texture to them. They emerge bright green and settling into a deep, rich green as the season advances. It flowers in late spring to early summer, masses of slender spikes of curious spidery yellow-greenish flowers held high above the foliage. It looks great edging paths in woodland schemes or in shadier areas of the garden, or you can grow it in raised containers in shady areas to allow its charming and unusual appearance to be appreciated close up.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The foliage will gently mound to a height of around 20cm metre, with the spikes of flowers held above that to around 40-50cm. It will spread to cover a surface of around 30cm or so.

Growing Advice

Mitella breweri really does want to be in the shade – and preferably in moist (but not wet) conditions, so keep it to path edges or drifts through a wooded area rather than at the foot of large trees and shrubs where the soil might dry out. It’s perfectly happy in heavy, damp clay and pairs beautifully with other woodland favourites – contrasting particularly effectively with brighter-coloured hostas of the more filigree, fine foliage of woodland ferns.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
