Gypsophilia paniculata

Hardy form of Baby’s Breath, compact perennial with sprays of button-white flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Gypsophilia paniculata is a perennial, hardy version of this much loved summer flowering plant. It is commonly known as ‘Baby’s Breath’, a name which evokes its sprays of delicate white flowers held aloft on thin stems so that the flowers seem to float in the air. The dense clouds of button foliage have made it best known for growing for cut flowers, where it is often combined with large, strong-flowered plants like roses. However it also has a good role to play in a border, with its combination of upright foliage made up of neat, slim lance-shaped leaves and clouds of button white flowers giving borders a relaxed, summery feel. In borders it can also work as in bouquets – as a foil when used in combination with bolder, larger flowered perennials, shrubs and annuals.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 90cm (3 feet or so) with a spread of around 50-60cm (2 feet).

Growing Advice

Baby’s Breath plants are generally pretty easy to grow, but benefit from lots of sunshine and a bit of room to spread, paying attention to making sure that the foliage still has access to sun and light as the season progresses. They also want sharp drainage and prefer slightly alkaline to neutral soils, and will be short-lived in heavier soils (though they aren’t the longest-lived of perennials in any case). The semi-evergreen foliage can be tidied in spring to make way for new growth and they can be easily propagated via seeds or cuttings – though as many plants with tap roots they resent root disturbance so are best left in situ when propagating.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
