Athyrium filix-femina ‘Rotstiel’

Lady Fern cultivar with finely divided, graceful fronds and contrasting red stems

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Athyrium filix-femina ‘Rotstiel’ is commonly called the Lady Fern, so named by Victorian plant hunters (the Victorians were famous for their love of ferns) on account of the more elegant, graceful and refined nature of the fronds. Unlike its diametric opposite, the Male Fern (Dryopteris) it also hides its sporangia (the spore bearing features on the underside of fern fronds). This cultivar bears all of the elegance of the species plant but in a more compact size, and stands out for its red-green stems that makes an attractive contrast with the bright-green foliage, particularly in the early part of the season.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They can grow to an ultimate height of around 60cm with a spread of about 50cm.

Growing Advice

This is a highly adaptable fern that like most ferns is happiest in shady or partially shady spots where it gets a constant supply of moisture (though it doesn’t want to sit in water so avoid boggy spots). However it has the benefit of tolerating sunnier locations, as long as the soil doesn’t dry out, and in shady spots is also more tolerant of drier soils than many ferns once established (making it a good choice for growing at the base of trees where thirsty tree roots can dry out the soil). Otherwise it likes its soil rich and prefers a more sheltered location so the elegant fronds are protected from wind damage.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
