Silene schafta

Pretty compact alpine Catchfly with masses of soft pink flowers in late summer and autumn

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Silene schafta, the Autumn Catchfly, is a great little plant for vibrant colour in late summer and into autumn. In spring the semi-evergreen foliage starts back into growth, forming a neat mid-green semi-evergreen cushion of small, densely-packed leaves that gives the plant interest from the earliest days of spring through into winter. In late summer the intricate rose-pink flowers emerge from short stems that orientate themselves towards the midday sun. This compact, well-behaved Silene makes for a great alpine plant or on raised banks where its diminutive stature and cheery flowers can be best appreciated.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 25cm (10 inches) and a spread of around 30cm (12 inches).

Growing Advice

While many of the taller growing native catchflies do well in shadier spots, it’s best to think of Silene schafta like an alpine plant that likes good drainage and as much sun as you can get it. Because it performs later in the year it won’t mingle well with mixed perennials that are at their most substantive and luxurious in late summer and may crowd out more diminutive plants like this Silene. Otherwise however it is pretty easy to grow, and stays neat and compact through until mid to late winter when the plant will appreciate a hair cut to make way for the fresh new foliage and flowers later in the year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
