Hosta ‘Devon Green’

Mid-sized hosta with slender, rich-green leaves and lavender flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Hosta ‘Devon Green’ is an elegant mid-sized hosta, with a compact habit and mounding, slender lance-shaped leaves. The foliage is a lovely deep, rich green in colour, with an attractive waxy sheen. Its neat habit and rich green coloration makes for a good contrast with variegated hostas and finely detailed ferns in shadier spots. The flowers, held 10 to 15cm above the mounding foliage, are an attractive lavender colour and emerge from early summer onwards.
Hosta ‘Devon Green’ is a versatile hosta that will work excellently in bringing colour and form to shady spots but can also be grown, in our experience, in sunnier spots (providing it is kept well-watered). Like all hostas it also looks great on the margins of ponds or as a colour and form contrast among woodland planting. It can also be used in containers, where it can act as a foil among pot displays with other plants with bolder flowers and colours.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 50cm (20 inches) with a spread of around a metre (3 feet or so).
The photographs are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. You should also expect some variation in the coloration of hosta foliage as the season develops and depending on the plant’s sun exposure. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do send us a message.

Growing Advice

There is a bit of a misnomer that hostas need to be constantly wet to do well. They certainly don’t like soil that dries out, but they can also rot if allowed to sit in water, particularly over winter, so make sure they have a spot that is reasonably well-drained. Hostas are also better grown in partial or full shade – keep them out of afternoon mid-summer sun, which can scorch the leaves. The frustrating slug and snail damage can be warded off, in our experience, with a regular treatment with garlic spray (various recipes are available on the internet). We also find growing hostas in pots does a lot to keep the slugs and snails off.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
