Centranthus ruber ‘Snowcloud’

Cultivated form of the wildflower Valerian with masses of pure white flowers above blue-green foliage

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Centranthus ruber ‘Snow Cloud’ (Valerian) is a striking pure white variant of the normal pink/red valerian. Valerians are perennial, upright growing wildflower with striking and very long-lasting, dense clusters of deep pink, red or white flowers and glaucous, blue-green foliage. Here in Cornwall it grows wild at the base of hedgerows and on top of old stone walls, and when in full flower is usually found thrumming with pollinators of all sorts. It is frequently used as a cut flower and adds a touch of informality and wildness in garden settings.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will flower from June through to October, if dead-headed, and will grow to an ultimate height of around 75cm (30 inches) with a spread of 40-50cm (15-20 inches).

Growing Advice

Centranthus ruber is a very easy and forgiving plant to grow. It loves full sun, but ideally prefers poorer, limey soils rather than rich soils. Just make sure the soil is reasonably well-drained – there is a reason valerians pop up in crevasses in walls!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
