Physostegia virginiana

Hardy perennial with upright habit and lilac-pink snapdragon flowers from late summer

Established plant supplied in two-litre container

Description

Physostegia virginiana, more commonly known as the Obedient Plant on account of the way the flowers stay in position when the stems are displaced, is an upright growing hardy perennial that is great for late-summer and autumn interest. From spring the foliage emerges mid-green, with slender leaves on upright stems, forming an attractive clump that bulks up through summer. Towards the end of the summer the buds emerge and open out up the stems into snapdragon shaped (the plant is also known as the false snapdragon for this reason) tubular flowers that are a pretty lilac-pink in colour. Wonderfully adaptable and resilient, it is a plant that can be grown in a number of garden situations.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about a metre high in the right conditions with a spread of around half of that – however they can spread by rhizomes to form bigger colonies over time.

Growing Advice

These are dead easy plants to grow – for best flowering keep them in a sunny or partially shaded spot and don’t allow them to completely dry out. The biggest challenge can be managing the spread – they are, after all, in the mint family, so think carefully about where to plant them. We prefer giving them some room where they are not competing with lots of other plants in close proximity – edge of woodland areas works well. They’ll also grow well in containers as long as they don’t dry out. They can be grown in borders but just be aware that if they’re happy there they may end up taking over!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
