Digitalis lanata ‘Cafe Creme’

Unusual coffee and cream-flowered perennial foxglove with woolly stems

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Digitalis lanata ‘Cafe Creme’ is affectionately known as the woolly foxglove on account of its tall, softly hairy stems and flowers. It’s an unusual plant with a really striking presence when grown in groups that hails from the warmer climes of southern and eastern Europe (the hairs are a means of retaining water). The leaves are neat, semi-evergreen, lance-shaped and smooth, with pronounced veining, and in summer the plant throws up tall spires covered in buds that open into elegant classic foxglove shaped flowers, with a pronounced lower lip and ‘coffee and cream’ colourations of dusky orange, bronze, white, pale yellow and gold-cream. The flowers have striking deep bronze-brown veining to attract pollinators.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to a height of around 60-80cm (2 to 3 feet) with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Digitalis lanata grows natively on woodland margins and by preference likes partially-shaded locations with some protection from the mid-afternoon sun. In our view they look amazing when massed on gentle slopes in informal schemes (like all foxgloves, they have a slightly wild, naturalistic vibe about them), where they can sway gently in the breeze and the late-afternoon sun can light up the speckled throats of the flowers. They aren’t too fussy with soil, as long as it’s not too wet or too dry – and the tall flower spikes can be removed to encourage flowering side shoots or to avoid too much self-seeding.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
