Lychnis chalcedonica

Compact upright hardy perennial with bold red-orange domes of flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Lychnis chalcedonica is commonly known as the Maltese or Jerusalem Cross because of its bright red-orange, cross-shaped flowers, which are arranged in globe-shaped clusters held above the foliage on sturdy stems. This perennial has bushy, compact and upright foliage, with slightly hairy stems. The flowers arrive from early summer and are massed up to a height of around a metre. This makes them great for cut flowers, while the mass of flowers on each dome provides food for all manner of pollinators.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will flower from mid-summer through to early autumn, and will grow to an ultimate height of up to a metre (around 3 feet), with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Maltese Cross plants are easy to grow. They will do well in either sun or partial sun locations, and can tolerate a range of soils – though prefer soils that are at least moderately fertile and don’t dry out. They can work well as marginal plants where the roots don’t get too water-logged in winter. You may want to provide support to keep the plant and its flowers upright during summer rains – though they can also be attractive left to grow a bit more casually and mingle with other plants around.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
