Description

Agapanthus ‘Gayle’s Lilac’ is a mid-sized agapanthus with evergreen, grasslike foliage and unusual (for an agapanthus) pale lilac flowers towards the end of the summer. The foliage is neat and compact in form and provides contrast and interest mingling among perennials and shrubs year-round. From July onwards the plant will begin to put out strong flowering stems – we love Agapanthus almost as much because of the way the strong stems emerge above the neat foliage and the way this builds the anticipation of flowering. When the flowers do open they are a soft pastel lilac, varying in hue from almost white to pastel blue around the edges of the star-shaped flowers. A great plant for front of borders but particularly good in containers.

These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost and are supplied in two-litre pots. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 50cm (20 inches) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

The key thing for Agapanthus is sun – as much of it as you can give it. Without enough sun the flowering display will be diminished. There is some backwards and forwards about whether Agapanthus like to be constrained in a pot or not – our opinion is that this doesn’t matter as much as giving the plant sunshine and lots of light, and making sure it is watered well in the drier parts of the season after flowering is done when new flower buds form. Flowering will also improve year on year as the plant bulks out and matures. As this is an evergreen variety it can be a little tender, and certainly won’t like heavy winter wet combined with frosts, so we’d advise growing them in containers that can be moved under cover in winter in a frost-free spot. Don’t let them completely dry out but they also will never like sitting in water – the thick succulent roots do a good job of storing water for drier periods.
