Rudbeckia laciniata ‘Herbstsonne’

Tall coneflower with rich, golden-yellow flowers from late summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Rudbeckia laciniata ‘Herbstsonne’ (‘Autumn Sun’) is just a brilliant, strong robust plant for a sunny back of border spot. We love it because it’s super reliable and emerges in spring as a clump of lovely dense, strong, interestingly shaped foliage that slowly gains height and mass through the growing season. Once mid-summer has past, the roses have quietened down and other early and mid season flowers have had their peak this Rudbeckia takes on another life, sending up tall strong budding stems that emerge in the back end of summer as large (up to 10cm across), rich golden-yellow daisy-like flowers with pale-green centres and slightly drooping petals. The flowering goes on for ages – right through the back end of summer and well into autumn. It’s also great for us in the west country as it stands up really well to the autumn rains and rarely needs staking, despite its height. It really keeps that sense of summer going, and for that it’s very welcome.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of 120-180cm or so (4 to 6 feet), depending on the richness of the soil, with a spread of a little more than half that.

Growing Advice

Rudbeckias are prairie plants, and as such used to growing in sunny open spaces exposed to mid-summer sun and wind. It will thrive the most where you can replicate these conditions, and will certainly grow most robustly in full sun. However we’ve also grown ours in part-shaded locations and they have done well and certainly flowered strongly, though if grown in part-shade in rich soil the plant might need a little staking to see it at its best, particularly if autumn rains set in. That said, if it does flop over it does so quite gracefully in our experience, and there is something equally joyous about a tall plant mingling its flowers in amongst the lower growing plants around it.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
