Lilium formosanum var. pricei

Dwarf Lily from Taiwan with large trumpet-shaped flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Lilium formosanum var. pricei (commonly known as the Formosa Lily as it originates in Formosa, now known as Taiwan) is a rarely seen plant in UK gardens but that makes for a striking presence in rock gardens, sloped areas or in containers. In spring it puts up dark green, slim strappy foliage, much like a cultivated dwarf grass plant like Hakonechloa, but from mid-summer onwards it sends up dark red buds full of promise that emerge later into large typical lily flowers, looking like a flared trumpet, with white fading into red-pink flushing on the outside of the petals and prominent stamens (very similar to the more usually seen Lilium regale flowers). Like many lilies, the flowers are beautifully scented. The scent alone has for us always been sufficient to keep growing lilies in our garden – there is nothing quite like it for stopping you dead in your tracks and taking it in.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The large flowers (around 10cm long) will reach up to an ultimate height of about 25cm (10 inches), with the overall plant spreading across a similar distance.

Growing Advice

Formosa lilies are amongst the easiest of lilies to grow in the garden and relatively long-lived. Because of their diminutive height they are best suited in our opinion for rocky or slope areas raised above pathways, or raised containers, but they will also do a job at the front of borders. The closer you can get to the holy grail of moisture retentive soil in the summer that also provides good drainage in the winter the better for this plant (though if in doubt focus on avoiding planting locations that are waterlogged in winter). It will also do best in full sun locations but can take some shade.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
