Astilbe ‘Lilac’

Plumes of vibrant lilac-pink flowers above divided bronze-green foliage

Established plants supplied in 2 litre containers

Description

Astilbe x ‘Lilac’ has tall plumes of soft, feathery lilac-coloured flowers from early summer. Before that, from early spring, the foliage makes its own statement as it emerges from the ground in a burst of strong bronze-green colour, the deeply divided, fern-like foliage an unmistakable reminder that spring has arrived. The flowers are beautifully offset against deep bronze-green foliage. Along with Peonies, Astilbes are one of those plants that provide plenty of interest from mid-spring onwards, when the new growth emerges strongly as deep crimson shoots, that open out into shimmering, ferny foliage that beautifully complements mid-spring bulbs and early flowering perennials.
Astilbes are traditionally grown on water margins, or in damp and woodland gardens, but will also provide strong early interest in a herbaceous border.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm and a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Astilbes like things damp (hence why they are often found on water margins in their native environments) and prefer shadier conditions, though they will take some sun as long as they are not allowed to dry out too much. So in our experience the number one consideration when growing astilbes is to make sure to plant them somewhere where the soil is water retentive (though not water-logged) and full of organic material; think forest floors and the margins of natural ponds and streams. Where they are happy they will clump up over time, and are easy to divide in either autumn or spring.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
