Primula vulgaris ‘Everlast’

Long-flowering primula with pale-yellow flowers and strong, fresh foliage

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Primulas are a real symbol of spring. Found throughout wooded areas and on the margins or streams and paths across Europe, but particularly here in the UK, they are one of the earliest perennials to emerge and flower, offering an early promise of warmer months to come and an end to the greys of winter. What they lack in size they more than make up for with mounds of cheerily colourful flowers – this cultivar has very long-lasting pale-yellow flowers lasting from February through to mid April, with striking deep-orange centres. The flowers grow in clusters held above rosettes of rich green, oval-shaped foliage. As a bonus we’ve also found that this cultivar will repeat flower again in late summer and autumn, as the weather cools.
These plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The foliage will grow in clumps to about 15cm (6 inches) high, with flowers held a few cms above this, and the plant will spread to ultimately form a clump about 20-30cm (7-12 inches) wide. Where happy they will self-seed to form small colonies.

Growing Advice

Primulas love the cooler, damper climate of temperate European countries. They are often found in woodland settings, where like other spring flowers they have developed to burst into growth as the soil warms and the days grow longer but before the leaves of the trees emerge overhead. They grow best in woodland margins, where the soil is reliably damp and light penetrates through the canopy of leafless trees in spring, before the leaves emerge in the trees to shade the plants from the harshest of the summer sun.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
