Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’

Unusual dwarf Sea Holly with masses of metallic blue flowers from mid summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ is a really pretty and unusual dwarf Sea Holly, ideal for sunny border edges, gravel gardens, rockeries or container growing. There’s nothing else quite like an eryngium in the garden – this cultivar has a low mound of divided foliage with paler veining, which in mid-summer gives way, all of a sudden, to strong shoots containing multiple buds that open into metallic, steely blue flowers. The flowers are surrounding by a serrated ruff of bracts that help each flower look distinct and give the plant a strong form that enhances the plants architectural qualities.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 30cm (12 inches) and a spread of around 45cm (18 inches).

Growing Advice

Eryngium planum likes sun – as much as you can give it – for the most striking colouration in its flowers. It can be a slow starter in spring and summer, but don’t be fooled, for once it starts to put up flowering stems they come quickly and strongly – so be careful about crowding the plant out with other perennials or shrubs that emerge and perform earlier in the season. They really need free draining soil, or at least a spot where they are protected from excessive winter wet. We grow ours on the top of a clay slope – the slope ensures good drainage and the height enhances the plant’s structural qualities. Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ is particularly good in pots.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
