Leptinella squalida ‘Platt’s Black’

Unusual ground-cover with purple/black ferny foliage

Price is for two plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Leptinella squalida ‘Platt’s Black’ is a really unusual and interesting mat-forming ground cover plant. It’s incredibly textured, dark-green to black foliage has caught the eye of garden designers and now it regularly finds a home for itself on RHS show gardens and in all manner of modern planting schemes. The plant forms a mass of feathery, ferny foliage that is a glossy purple-black with green tips. In exposed, sunnier spots the foliage can take on brown hues. The plant has small button-like gold flowers in summer.
Leptinella squalida is a plant that is best grown as groundcover or as a naturalistic filling in cracks in paving or stonework or edging pathways – much like plants like creeping Thyme. It will also work well in combination with taller plants in container displays.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1 litre pots (the price is for two of these plants). They will reach a maximum height of around 10cm and will spread around wherever happy – but is easy to control and divide as it isn’t very deep-rooted.

Growing Advice

Leptinella squalida is a realitively easy to grow plant, as long as it has decent drainage and isn’t allowed to dry out too much. It can cope with a range of sun exposures and the colour will vary somewhat, depending on the amount of exposure it has. For richer, darker green colours you may find it best in sheltered spots with some protection from the midday sun – but it is worth experimenting with!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
